On October 29th, 2022 on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore County the Towson - Catonsville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi’s Social Action Committee hosted the Men’s Health Care Matters - Prostate Cancer Roundtable. The event began with State Senator Charles Sydnor giving words of encouragement. The Doctors and Nurses of Ascension St Agnes and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GMBC) Hospitals presented information that was not only powerful but also helpful. The information exchanged at the event could help attendees save lives by avoiding the serious consequences of late stage detection.
We learned that prostate cancer is 97% curable if detected early, however; we also learned that African American men have the highest mortality rate of all ethnicities. Communication and education are key elements to assist us in helping our community combat the high rates of death from this cancer.
The Nurses of Ascension St Agnes provided information for attendees to sign up for FREE prostate cancer screening that will be provided at the hospital during the following week.
The event was truly successful, and it was filled with valuable health related information. We hope that the attendees will spread the important information to friends and family members, again education is a key factor in helping us combat this cancer in our community.
